Floyd County Schools College and Career Academy has completed the journey to becoming one of Georgia’s first charter technical centers.  The school’s transformation from Floyd County Technical High to a world class technical center has been a community collaboration between Floyd County Schools, Coosa Valley Technical College and the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce.  The College and Career Academy will continue to grow and develop career tracks based upon the needs of the community and the interests of students.

The school was created with the challenge of reaching four goals::

• Design a school that will develop and sustain a highly skilled work-force for the community.
• Develop a program that will provide a seamless transition between high school and post secondary training
• Meet the needs of business and industry and improve the communities ability to attract new business and industry to the community and 
• Impact the system's high school completion rate.

The school development was piloted by a community steering committee (see members and minutes links under the photo) made up of representatives from business, industry, education and parents of the community.  The school was in a select group of new charters to receive a $3.2 million grant from the state to develop a charter program.  The grant will be used to construct a new facility to house the School of Engineering and Robots scheduled to open in the fall of 2009.
